120” vs. 180” Boxing Handwraps: Which Should I Choose?

120” vs. 180” Boxing Handwraps: Which Should I Choose?

When stepping into boxing, Muay Thai, kickboxing, or MMA, one of the most overlooked but essential pieces of gear is the handwrap. A good pair of wraps protects your knuckles, supports your wrists, and ensures your gloves fit comfortably. But with two standard lengths—120 inches and 180 inches—many women wonder: which is better for their training?
At Athena Fightwear, we designed our boxing handwraps for women who do intensive training in striking sports like Muay Thai and Boxing. We're now starting to add a 120 inch option as we know that the 180 inch is not for everyone, so let’s break down the pros and cons of each length and help you make the right choice.

Why Handwraps Matter

Before comparing lengths, it’s worth remembering why hand wraps are a must-have:
  • Protection: They stabilize the small bones and joints in your hands.
  • Support: They reinforce your wrists to prevent sprains.
  • Comfort: They help your gloves fit snugly, reducing friction and blisters.
Skipping wraps, especially in combat sports like Muay Thai and MMA, can lead to unnecessary injuries.

120” Hand Wraps for Women

Best for: light western boxing training, cardio boxing, light bag or pad work
Shorter wraps (120”) are often a good fit for women with smaller hands or those training at lower intensity levels.
Advantages of 120” Wraps
  • Faster wrapping: Less material to manage.
  • Slimmer fit: Ideal for smaller fitting boxing gloves.
  • Lightweight: Comfortable for those doing more cardio/fitness-based boxing
Drawbacks
  • Provide less wrist support than longer wraps.
  • Limited protection for heavy bag work or sparring.
  • Not recommended for women prone to wrist or knuckle injuries.
Our 120” handwraps are perfect if you’re just starting your boxing journey or using them for fitness-focused training. They give you just enough protection without feeling bulky inside your gloves.

180” Handwraps for Women

Best for: serious training, sparring, heavy bag, Muay Thai, MMA
Longer wraps (180”) are the gold standard for most fighters because they offer more security and versatility.
Advantages of 180” Wraps
  • Extra wrist support: Crucial during sparring or when throwing powerful punches.
  • More knuckle padding: Keeps your hands safer during heavy bag sessions.
  • Versatile wrapping styles: Works for traditional boxing or Muay Thai-style wraps.
Drawbacks
  • Takes sliiiightly longer to wrap.
  • Can feel slightly bulky inside smaller gloves if wrapped too thickly.
  • May be less comfortable for women with very petite hands.
All of our handwraps are available in 180" since they are the standard for intensive striking sports, and we design them for women who train hard. They provide maximum protection for wrists and knuckles, whether you’re boxing, kickboxing, or mixing it up in MMA.

Which Length Is Right for You?

  • Choose 120” wraps if you’re a beginner, attending fitness or western boxing classes, or have smaller hands and want a lighter wrap.
  • Choose 180” wraps if you’re sparring, hitting the heavy bag or doing intensive padwork, or training seriously in boxing, Muay Thai, or MMA.
Some women keep both in their gym bag—shorter wraps for lighter workouts, longer wraps for fight camp or harder training days.

So What Will You Choose?

When it comes to boxing hand wraps for women, the choice between 120” vs. 180” comes down to your training style, glove size, and personal preference.
At Athena Fightwear, we’ve created wraps specifically for women—balancing comfort, protection, and performance—so you can train with confidence. Whether you’re stepping into your first boxing class or preparing for your next fight, the right hand wraps make all the difference.
👉 Pro tip: If you’re starting your first western boxing class, you can try out our 120” wraps to first get an understanding of how things work and feel with a handwrap. Once you progress to more intensive training, you can add 180" wraps to your kit if needed.
Instead if you're heading into muay thai for the first, we recommend going straight to 180".
