Should You Wear Ankle Supports for Muay Thai?

Short answer: Ankle supports aren't required for Muay Thai, but many people do wear them. They add light compression around the ankle, give a bit of cushioning where your shin and instep hit the pads, and help keep sweat off the mats. They won't prevent serious sprains or replace rehab, but if you want them for comfort and a little extra support, our Muay Thai ankle supports are made for exactly that.

What do Ankle Supports do in Muay Thai? | Athena Fightwear

What ankle supports actually do

  • Light compression: a snug, supported feeling around the ankle joint
  • Skin protection: a thin layer over the instep, where you most often hit Thai pads and bags
  • Sweat control: they soak up sweat from your feet and ankles
  • Warmth: some fighters like the warm feeling on the joint, especially in cold gyms

What they don't do

  • They don't stop your ankle rolling the way a medical brace or tape does
  • They aren't shin guards, so you'll still need shin pads for sparring
  • They don't treat injuries. If you have ankle pain or a recent sprain, see a physio

Who should wear Muay Thai ankle supports?

  • Beginners whose feet and ankles aren't used to kicking and pivoting barefoot
  • Anyone who wants light support or skin protection on the instep during pad rounds or bagwork (especially when the bags/pads have broken/cracked leather)

How should ankle supports fit?

Snug but not tight. You should be able to pivot on the ball of your foot without the support slipping, and you shouldn't get pins and needles. Our Athena 'Muay Thai Girls Club' ankle support in black is one size fits most, made in a polyester/cotton blend. It also comes in navy, dark green, mauve, light pink and light blue.

How to wash ankle supports

Wash after every few sessions in a laundry bag, and air dry. Like hand wraps, they hold sweat and smell if left in your gym bag.

FAQ

Do Muay Thai fighters wear ankle supports?

Many do, especially in Thailand. They're common in training and in fights where the rules allow them.

Do ankle supports prevent injury?

They give light support and compression, but they won't stop a serious sprain. Strength and mobility work matter more.

Can I wear ankle supports for kickboxing?

Yes. They work the same way for kickboxing as for Muay Thai.

Should I wear ankle supports with shin guards?

You can. Many fighters wear them under shin guards for extra comfort and to stop the guard rubbing.
